Are You Process-Oriented or Results-Oriented?

Feb 29, 2024

Written by: Joe Jardine

When it comes to our mental health, we often focus too much on the end goal. We think about how we want to feel, rather than how we can take action to get there. This is especially true when it comes to our self-esteem. We're constantly comparing ourselves to others, or focusing on that one thing we wish were different about ourselves. But what if we changed our perspective? What if instead of focusing on the result, we focused on the process? On taking small steps every day towards becoming our best selves? It may not be as glamorous as thinking about 'fixing' ourselves, but in the long run, it's a lot more sustainable. And who knows where it might lead us!

1. What is over-trying and how does it impact your performance in competition or at work?

It's important to understand the difference between trying hard and over-trying. "Trying hard" is when you're focused and giving your best effort. "Over-trying" is when you're no longer focused and are now just trying to will yourself to win.

When you're over-trying, you're no longer in control of your body or your mind. You're now just hoping that all of your hard work will pay off. And because you're no longer in control, you become more susceptible to choking under pressure and making mistakes.

When athletes or workers put in too much effort, their performance suffers. This can look different for different people, but it often manifests as increased anxiety, extreme focus on the outcome rather than the process, and excessive self-criticism. All of these can lead to choking, or performing below your capabilities.

The key to avoiding over-trying is to stay in the present moment, focus on what's important, and not worry about things that are out of your control.

2. The importance of being process-oriented rather than result-oriented

Being process-oriented means that you focus on the journey rather than the destination. That is, you are more interested in how you achieve your goals than simply achieving them.

There are a few reasons why this perspective is important. First, it ensures that you stay motivated throughout the process since you are enjoying yourself along the way. Second, it allows you to learn from your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them in the future. Finally, it makes the entire process more enjoyable and fun!

Result-oriented thinking can often lead to shortcuts and lapses in judgement since all you care about is getting to the end result as quickly as possible. This might work out in some cases but more often than not, it leads to subpar performance and Burnout.

When you’re focused on the process, you avoid over-trying and are less likely to choke in competition or at work. This is because you are always taking things one step at a time, focusing on what you can control, and not getting ahead of yourself. As a result, your achievements will be something that you have earned, rather than something that was given to you because of your focus on the outcome.

3. How to focus on the process and achieve better results

It's important to remember that the process is just as important as the goal itself. If you're not focusing on the process, you're not going to achieve the results you want. There is a lot you can do to stay focused on the process and not the results. First, remind yourself that the only thing you can control in any situation is your own performance. This means that worrying about the outcome will do nothing to help you achieve your goals. Next, focus on the steps that will lead you to your goal, rather than the end result. This will keep you in the moment and ensure that you are always moving towards your goal. Finally, be compassionate with yourself. No one is perfect, and mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. Remembering this will help you stay calm and focused when things don’t go as planned.

4. Tips for staying motivated when you're focused on the process rather than the result

When you’re focused on the process, staying motivated can be a challenge. After all, it can be difficult to see the progress you’re making when you only focus on the end goal. Here are a few tips for staying motivated in the face of difficulty:

  1. Set realistic goals for yourself and make sure that your goals are in line with your values. This will help you stay motivated when the going gets tough, because you will be working towards something that matters to you.
  2. Celebrate each small victory along the way. This will help keep you motivated and remind you of how far you’ve come.
  3. Remind yourself why you started in the first place. When you lose sight of your goals, remembering why you started is a great way to get back on track.
  4. Take some time for yourself. Relaxing and rejuvenating your mind and body will help keep you motivated and focused when you return to your pursuits.

Final thoughts

Focus on the process rather than the results and you'll achieve better outcomes. By staying focused on the steps that will lead you to your goal, you avoid over-trying and are less likely to choke in competition or at work. Additionally, by being compassionate with yourself and focusing on the journey, you'll enjoy your pursuits more and be more likely to reach your goals.
